<image:title>Astrophotography - Messier M51a - "The Whirlpool Galaxy"</image:title>
<image:caption>My first attempt at more serious astrophotography: This is the galaxy known as The Whirlpool Galaxy, or more technically, Messier 51a. It is "is an interacting grand-design spiral galaxy with a Seyfert 2 active galactic nucleus in the constellation Canes Venatici." (Thank you Wikipedia) It is anywhere from 15 to 35 million light years distant from the Milky Way. The image was captured early in the morning of February 25, 2015 by combining L, R, G and B images captured using the "T20" telescope in Mayhill, New Mexico through itelescope.net. And thank you to Nicole Mortillaro who introduced me to this really cool service, through which one remotely controls a network of telescopes around the globe. Nicole's images are amazing and make this first attempt by me look, well, like a first attempt. I have much to learn...</image:caption>

<image:title>Features - USA Today's Your Take</image:title>
<image:caption>This is the image that started it all with USA Today's Your Take. I had I had tweeted one of my favorite sunrise pictures, this very bright red sky, reflected in the lake behind my house. A local reporter for Florida Today tweeted back and suggested that I submit the photo you Your Take, and I did. I was contacted by a Your Take Community Manager named Melissa Gotlieb who was just great. A few days later this image was featured online. I'm really flattered to be featured by Your Take - some of the images people send them are really just amazing. But anyone can submit images, and between the various social networks, the Your Take community managers are quite able to get images some attention. So if you've got a good shot, definitely consider sending it to Your Take (link is above) and you might be featured.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is a view of Launch Complex 37 about 3 hours after the launch of the NROL37 atop a DeltaIV Heavy. It took longer than normal to clear the pad for us to pick up our cameras because there was a fire near the flame trench outlet (further down the road, to the right of the pad). When we were finally allowed out to pick up our cameras, we found quite a debris field. My remote setup fared rather well - it is the 2nd tripod from the left in the group of 5 tripods shown here near the lower middle of the frame. It is leaning to the left, but proudly not toppled completely.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stuff - Total Solar Eclipse (August 21, 2017) from Shaw Air Force Base</image:title>
<image:caption>To buy this image, visit: http://www.photosofstuff.xyz/Solar-Eclipse-2017/ The total solar eclipse of August 21, 2017, seen from Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, South Carolina. In the foreground are two F-16 Fighting Falcons from the F-16 Viper Demo team, parked at the end of the runway for us to use as subjects. Composited into the image are shots of the Sun as it marches toward (and then, away from) totality. I had set the interval timer to capture a frame every 5 minutes, but because of clouds (and, at times, rain), there is some inconsistency in the spacing and the exposure of the sun. The images represent two hours of motion, with the first image taken at 1:46 pm (ET) and the last frame taken at 3:45 pm. The flare of light (it is hard to make out in a wide shot like this, but it's almost the "diamond ring" effect) is the totality coming to an end, and this is the last image I would take before replacing the solar filter for the rest of the sequence. Specs for the background image: ISO500, f11, .5 second exposure. The settings for the shots of the sun vary widely depending on clouds and how far the eclipse had progressed. And, because the sun was so high in the sky, I (naturally) framed the shot vertically and was shooting with a 17-40mm lens set to 23mm, on a full-frame Canon body. And, again, big thanks to the Public Affairs and Communication teams at Shaw Air Force Base and to the F-16 Viper Demo team for moving these planes into position for us, and for being so entirely hospitable to the We Report Space team.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stuff - Forged in fire, bound for fire: Parker Solar Probe + Delta IV He</image:title>
<image:caption>Forged in fire, bound for fire: Parker Solar Probe + Delta IV Heavy This series of frames comes from a sound-activated camera I placed at Launch Complex 37 approximately 32 hours before the 3:31 am (ET) Sunday (August 12, 2018) morning launch of a United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy rocket. Sitting atop the rocket is the Parker Solar Probe, bound for a first-ever mission to, as NASA so nicely phrased it, "touch the Sun" resulting in temperatures upwards of 2,500 degrees (F). This sequence encompasses approximately 10-seconds, and it captures the Delta IV Heavy coming to life in a particularly fiery manner: it lights itself on fire before ignition to burn off stray fumes, and then a moment later the Aerojet / Rocketdyne RS-68A engines ignite, pushing the rocket skyward, or rather, spaceward. ULA CEO Tory Bruno indicated on Twitter that they refer to this rocket as "The Beast" and you can see why. (Pihotos: Michael Seeley / We Report Space)</image:caption>

<image:title>Stuff - AEHF5 by United Launch Alliance</image:title>
<image:caption>This is the United Launch Alliance AEHF-5 satellite launch. With a launch time of 6:13am (ET) and a sunrise of 6:48am, the downrange plume caught the rising sunlight perfectly. There's even a hint of crepuscular rays emanating from the horizon. This is a 251-second exposure captured from Palm Shores, Florida, looking across the Indian River Lagoon. The shadowy figure on the dock is a fisherman, net fishing, but he sure paused to watch the launch. Afterward, he asked me if the rocket exploded, and I assured him it did exactly what it was supposed to do. To purchase: https://www.photosofstuff.xyz/AEHF5-AtlasV-by-ULA/i-dwmzfHs/A</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is a composite of 2 images taken of the #Thaicom8 #Falcon9 rocket launch by #SpaceX at approximately 5:39pm (ET) on May 27, 2016 from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. This shows the first 97 seconds of the launch. The first image is the rocket lifting off, a 45 seconds exposure and the second image is a 52 second exposure. The break in the streak is of course where the first exposure ended and the second one started.

Other technical details: It was shot at 17mm, at ISO400 and f8 through two ND filters, a 10-stop and a 3 stop.</image:caption>

<image:caption>And of course I grabbed some star (and Moon!) trails while waiting for the #Echostar23 #Falcon9 launch by #SpaceX, seen here from the A. Max Brewer Bridge in Titusville. As noted previously, the rocket trajectory carried the rocket almost directly away from me, thus eliminating the typical arc you see if I were to the south of the pad. The details: 57 frames at 30 secs, ISO400, f6.3 and the last two frames were shot at ISO400, f18 for 164 secs and 167, with the 167 second frame being the rocket streak. Initial processing done in Lightroom, stacking done in Photoshop and then final edits done (again) in Lightroom.</image:caption>

<image:title>SpaceX - #Zuma #Falcon9 by #SpaceX: Streak #2, a single, 464-second expos</image:title>
<image:caption>While rumors swirl around about the possible loss of the #Zuma, launched last night by #SpaceX atop a #Falcon9, may I present Streak(s) #2, another SINGLE, 464-second exposure. In a possible act of photographic overkill, I was running three different cameras in roughly the same spot last night for the Zuma launch (and landing!). Because I've shot both OG2 and CRS9 from this place at Jetty Park, I knew the vertical shot would work fine (see my post from last night), but I wanted to experiment with some foreground. So, I set the second DSLR (really, my primary camera, a Canon 5D4) with some of the Jetty in the foreground. Details: ISO100, 464-second exposure, f18 with a Rokinon 14mm on a Canon 5D Mark IV (full-frame) body. Prints available here: http://www.photosofstuff.xyz/Zuma-by-SpaceX/i-SsHpWCQ/A</image:caption>

<image:title>SpaceX - Falcon Heavy by SpaceX</image:title>
<image:caption>At 3:45pm (ET) SpaceX and Elon Musk successfully launched the Falcon Heavy rocket from historic Pad 39A at Nasa's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.. Approximately 8 minutes after launch, the two outer cores would return safely to SpaceX's Landing Zone 1 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. According to SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, the center core ran out of fuel needed to relight 3 engines for the re-entry burn. The core was unable to slow its descent and it crashed into the Atlantic Ocean at approximately 300 mph. Musk added that he was most interested in recovering the two outer cores, as they flew with titanium grid fins, which are very expensive to make.</image:caption>

Image captured by a sound-activated camera placed ~2,000 feet from the pad. This was by far my soggiest camera, having hung out there for 3 days during heavy storms and tornado warnings. <image:caption>At 3:27 am (EDT) on Saturday, August 26, SpaceX launched a Falcon 9 rocket from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, sending a Crew Dragon spacecraft to space. The spacecraft is named Endurance, and an international crew of four representing four countries was onboard. NASA astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli, ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Andreas Mogensen, JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) astronaut Satoshi Furukawa, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Konstantin Borisov will dock at the International Space Station after a 22-hour journey. Eight minutes after the launch, SpaceX returned the Falcon 9 first-stage booster to Cape Canaveral, where it will be readied for reuse and a future flight.</image:caption>

<image:caption>One of my "nebula" photos from the March 3 crewed rocket launch was selected as NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day ("APOD") for today, March 7. This honor humbles me, as several people captured excellent images of this launch, including some of this nebula, a spectacle caused by "plumes and exhaust" after the second stage (carrying the crew of 4) separated from the Falcon 9 first-stage rocket booster. And however cool it might look in a still image, it doesn't do the scene justice. It is truly one of the coolest things to watch. I found this particular image the morning after the launch; when I was first processing the images immediately after the launch, I skipped over it. At first, I favored a couple of pictures from five seconds after this one, where the nebula was almost twice as large. But you couldn't make out the booster in those other frames, whereas here, you can see it. The caption written by the APOD team, Robert Nemiroff (MTU) & Jerry Bonnell (UMCP), is great, and you can read it here:https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.htmlorhttps://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap240307.html</image:caption>
